A rock and cobble reef sits roughly 60 yards off the sand and throws a compact, angular peak. The left is the marquee wave, sucking hollow on takeoff before shouldering into a playful inside reform, while the right rolls softer off the peak and links to the same shorebreak section. Head high winter swells produce the occasional tube on lower tides. Best suited to confident intermediates who can pick a line quickly.

WHEN IT WORKS

West and northwest groundswells light the reef from November through March, making winter the standout window. Fall shoulders in a useful mix of NW pulses and lingering south energy. East or light offshore mornings hold the shape before the afternoon onshore fills in. A dropping tide from mid to low sharpens the wall, though very low water exposes more rock on the inside and shortens the ride.

WHAT TO KNOW

The reef itself is the main concern, shallow rock and cobble that punishes deep falls, so going flat beats going deep on wipeouts. Crowds are the constant, with one narrow takeoff pulling twenty plus on any decent swell and a tight regular crew that expects clean etiquette. Rip currents pulse along the reef edges after bigger sets and can push surfers toward exposed rocks. Shark sightings occur but stay rare.

Less than 5 min walk on average

The paid state lot sits directly off Coast Highway 101 at South Cardiff State Beach, with gates unlocking around 7am and restrooms on site. Free curb parking on Ocean Street in Solana Beach offers an earlier option, using the bluff top stairway that drops surfers at Tabletops, then walking two minutes south along the sand to the peak. Paddle out from the beach is short, roughly 40 yards straight to the takeoff.
