Punchy beach break over sand, with shifty bars that occasionally throw a short hollow section on solid days. The wave breaks steep and quick, so rides stay brief but rewarding when a clean southwest lines up with light offshore wind. Peaks wander with the sand, favoring surfers who read banks fast. Intermediates get plenty on waist to chest days, while stronger surfers show up when it jumps head high.

WHEN IT WORKS

The south-facing stretch loads up on summer south and southwest swells, making June through September the most consistent window. Fall combo swells add west and northwest energy for reliable peaks into October. Wind usually stays glassy at dawn and turns onshore by late morning, so early sessions win. Mid tide tends to give the best shape before the sandbar gets swamped at high.

WHAT TO KNOW

Real dangers stay minimal since the bottom is sand and rip currents run typical for the stretch. The main issue is people. Weekends and clean summer swells pack the peak with locals plus overflow drifting down from Moonlight, and the vibe sharpens once the wave lines up. Shallow bars can rough up a bad landing, and the bluff stairs get slick after rain, so shoulder-season sessions feel far mellower.

GETTING THERE

Less than 5 min walk on average

The main route is the wooden staircase dropping from D Street Viewpoint Park at 404 W D Street down the bluff to the sand, a two-minute descent with a rinse shower at the bottom. Street parking on 3rd and 4th fills early on summer mornings. Moonlight State Beach sits one block north with a free lot, restrooms, and full facilities, about a five-minute walk back south along the sand.
