Cobble and eelgrass reef sitting off the San Elijo Lagoon mouth breaks well outside, sending long, rolling walls that peel both ways with a favored right. It holds size from waist high dribblers through overhead winter swell without closing out, staying mellow and predictable. Longboarders and improving surfers get patient shoulders, glide, and time to set a rail.

WHEN IT WORKS

Winter northwest and west swells deliver the largest, most consistent surf, while summer south pulses wrap in softer for longboard sessions. Low to mid tide usually shapes the reef best, since a full high tends to fatten the wave out. Dawn glass or east offshores clean it up; the standard afternoon westerly onshore chops the surface, so early is the play year round.

WHAT TO KNOW

Real dangers stay minor, but the reef sits shallow enough at low tide to scrape a fin or a foot on cobble and eelgrass. A rip can run along the lagoon mouth channel during bigger swells. The main headache is crowds, earning the nickname Crowdiff, with longboards, SUPs, and beginners stacked deep, so mind priority. Shuffle through sandy shallows to warn stingrays off.

Less than 5 min walk on average

Cardiff State Beach's paid lot sits on Coast Highway 101 across from the peak, roughly $10 all day or $4 an hour, and fills by mid-morning in summer. Free shoulder parking lines PCH north toward Pipes and south to Seaside. The highway runs at sand level, so the walk stays under a minute, flat, no stairs. Restrooms, outdoor showers, and seasonal lifeguards on site.
