The break sits over a rock-and-sand reef that throws a peaky left with a rippable wall, plus the occasional short right off the same peak. Size holds shoulder to overhead on a solid winter swell, with a quick drop into a punchy inside section. Intermediates who can read a reef find room, though the wave rewards confident shortboarders and funboard riders most.

WHEN IT WORKS
Winter is prime, with W and SW groundswells wrapping into the reef from roughly November through March and January often delivering the cleanest windows. NE and E offshore winds groom the faces early before onshores build. Low to mid tide works best, and a rising push toward mid tends to fatten the reef and keep sections lined up.

WHAT TO KNOW
Submerged rocks are the headline concern, especially at low tide in winter when more of the reef surfaces and barnacle-crusted stones can nick feet or fins. Rip currents stay modest but pick up after bigger swells, so keep track of the channel. Localism is mild, though weekends pack the peak with longboarders and shortboarders alike, so patience in the lineup helps.
GETTING THERE
Free street parking lines the west shoulder of Old Highway 101 and the dirt strip on the east side, with a paid lot at San Elijo State Beach as backup. A paved ramp at the north end of the campground bluff drops straight to sand, and four wooden staircases spaced along the 0.75 mile stretch offer shorter walks. Restrooms and rinse showers sit in the campground.
