Sand-bottom peaks stack up either side of the rock jetties that channel the Agua Hedionda inlet, and the south side is the prize. On a clean west or northwest pulse, the wave bends off the structure into a fast, punchy right that runs toward the beach, with the occasional shorter left. Best for confident intermediates and up who like quick takeoffs and a shortboard or fish under their feet.

WHEN IT WORKS

The spot faces open water and takes west and northwest swell cleanly, with some north energy wrapping in, so the peak season runs November through March. Summer south swells show up smaller and less organized. Morning offshores from the east and northeast groom it best, and it holds through most of the tide cycle, though a pushing mid tide tends to sharpen the shape.

WHAT TO KNOW

The jetty rocks are the main concern, since a wipeout on an inside section can put a surfer into the boulders in a hurry, and the channel between the walls pulls water back out with real force on bigger days. Crowds stay lighter than Tamarack or Terramar, so localism is minor, but the outflow can carry debris and the water quality dips after heavy rain draining the lagoon.

Less than 5 min walk on average

Closest parking is the paid state lot at Tamarack Avenue and Carlsbad Boulevard, with restrooms, showers and lifeguards on site. From the ramp it is a five to ten minute walk south along the sand to the jetties. Free street parking lines Carlsbad Boulevard heading south, and the seawall stairs near Cherry Avenue drop straight to the beach for a shorter paddle down.
