South Carlsbad State Beach Surf Forecast

Carlsbad, San Diego County

BREAK TYPE

Beach

Beach break along the Carlsbad campground bluffs.

GOOD FOR

Sand bottom with scattered rocks and cobble, running peaky lefts and rights along the campground stretch for a couple of miles. It lights up on a west-southwest groundswell with a light east wind and a medium tide, when shoulder-high peaks line up cleanly. Forgiving enough for solid intermediates, and the jetty peaks down at Ponto reward stronger surfers looking for a punchier corner.

WHEN IT WORKS

Winter groundswell

Winter is the headline season, with west and northwest groundswells firing most reliably around January and mornings often the cleanest window. Summer south swells wrap into Ponto, where the north jetty tends to shape the better lefts and the south jetty comes alive again once winter returns. Light east winds groom the faces before the afternoon onshore fills in and pushes chop through the lineup.

WHAT TO KNOW

Currents and crowds

Nothing especially gnarly on the average day, but a strong rip runs between the Ponto jetties on tide changes, pulled by the Batiquitos Lagoon outflow. Scattered rocks and cobble show at lower tides, and the campground staircases can be slick after rain with unstable bluff faces above, so give the base a wide berth. Crowds are the main hassle when Ponto turns on, so patience in the lineup helps.

GETTING THERE

Less than 5 min walk on average

Main entry is the bluff-top campground off Carlsbad Boulevard, where wooden staircases drop straight to the sand in roughly two minutes. South Ponto's day-use lot sits near La Costa Avenue for about $15 in peak season, and a small free lot at Avenida Encinas is reached via the Poinsettia Lane exit. Street parking lines Carlsbad Boulevard, with restrooms and rinse showers at both ends.
