On a solid west or northwest groundswell, the point peels off flat reef in mellow, shoulder-high rights with occasional lefts. Shape stays soft and rolling, best on longboards and mid-lengths, though shortboarders find zippier sections when it jumps overhead. Intermediate riders comfortable reading a reef bottom get the most out of it, and it rarely slabs or closes out hard.

WHEN IT WORKS

The point takes west and northwest swell cleanly and comes alive on winter groundswells from November through March. Summer south pulses light up the outer reefs but the inside often goes flat. Morning offshores off the coastal hills groom it before the afternoon westerly kicks in. Best tide is medium to medium-high, since low tide bares the reef and turns sections bony.

WHAT TO KNOW

The main hazard is the reef, which sits shallow at low tide and can bang fins, boards, and knees during clean-up sets. Rips pull along the north and south ends when swell stacks up on the sandbars. Sharks are a background note along North County rather than a specific concern here. Crowds stay modest, but the lineup is heavily local, so quiet paddle-ins and clear priority go a long way.

GETTING THERE

Less than 5 min walk on average

Public access drops down a bluff staircase off Carlsbad Boulevard near 5399 S21, under a minute from the street. Parking is free shoulder-only along the boulevard and fills fast on weekends. Northern and southern reef peaks sit a short walk down the sand from the base. No public restrooms are within walking distance and no lifeguards are stationed on the beach, though trucks patrol through.
