Sand-bottom beach break with peaks that shift as bars rearrange, offering a mix of short lefts and slightly longer rights near the small jetties. Waves usually run in the waist-to-head-high range, with occasional overhead sets on solid west swells. Shape is punchy but forgiving, welcoming beginners on softer days while intermediates find rippable sections when the banks line up.

WHEN IT WORKS

Open exposure grabs winter northwests and summer souths wrapping past Point Loma. The best window runs November through March, when overhead sets show up regularly. Mornings usually deliver offshore or light easterly wind before the daily westerly onshore fills in by late morning. A medium tide, incoming or dropping, tends to hold the best shape across the sandbars.

WHAT TO KNOW

Real dangers stay modest, but rip currents pull hard near the jetty rocks after bigger swells and shifting sandbars can create surprise inside sets. Submerged rocks flank both ends of the beach, so lining up a clean entry and exit matters. Crowds are the honest headline: lineups stack up quickly on clean weekends with a mix of shortboarders, longboarders, and learners jockeying for the same peaks.

GETTING THERE

Less than 5 min walk on average

Paid lot sits at the west end of Tamarack Avenue off Carlsbad Boulevard and fills fast on weekends. Metered spots along the boulevard and free street parking nearby cover the overflow with a five to ten minute walk. Stairways at Sycamore, Maple, Cherry, and Hemlock plus a ramp at Pine give alternate drops down the bluff. Restrooms and outdoor showers sit near the main lot.
