BREAK TYPE
Beach break near Scripps Pier in La Jolla with consistent waves.
GOOD FOR
Shifting sandbars off both sides of the pier throw punchy beach-break peaks, usually chest high but able to hold a couple feet overhead when a solid west or northwest swell lines up cleanly. The south side breaks straighter more often, with quick rights and lefts that reward shortboards and fishes. A mid tide sharpens the shape, and intermediates who can pick their peak get the most out of a session.

WHEN IT WORKS
Winter delivers the biggest and cleanest days as northwest groundswells push straight in, while autumn mixes north and south energy for the widest variety. Summer south swells arrive smaller but often glassy. Morning offshores drifting down from the eastern bluffs groom the faces before the afternoon onshore fills in, and a mid tide typically holds the best shape across the sandbars.

WHAT TO KNOW
The lineup itself is the main concern, with heavy crowds of mixed ability packing in close to shore and drop-ins getting frequent on peak days. Shuffle the feet walking out, especially late summer when stingrays and harmless leopard sharks move through the shallows. The break sits inside a marine reserve, so surfing is fine but disturbing wildlife is not. Rip currents form beside the pilings.
GETTING THERE
Street parking lines El Paseo Grande in the neighborhood above the beach, with a stairway dropping to the sand at the sharp bend past the last house. A small pay lot sits near the pier and fills early; the Scripps Institution lot requires a UCSD permit. Many surfers park down at La Jolla Shores and walk five to ten minutes north along the beach.
