La Jolla Shores Surf Forecast

La Jolla, San Diego County
La Jolla Shores surf break in San Diego — a lifeguard tower on groomed sand with the cliffs behind the waterline.

BREAK TYPE

Beach

Gentle beach break ideal for beginners and longboarders.

GOOD FOR

Sand-bottom beach break with soft, forgiving peaks scattered along a wide stretch of open coast. Waist to shoulder high on a typical day, with gentle shoulders and rolling whitewash on the inside. The outer sandbar can offer a rideable wall when a clean west or south pulse lands, though the vibe stays playful over punchy. Ideal for first-timers, longboarders, and cruisy small-wave sessions.

WHEN IT WORKS

Year-round workhorse

A wide swell window catches west, southwest, and south energy, with wrapping northwest pulses filling in through winter. January often delivers the cleanest, most consistent runs of the year. Dawn glass before the afternoon onshore westerly picks up is the reliable play. Mid to low tide sharpens the sandbars for a steeper wall, while a pushing tide softens the inside for learners.

WHAT TO KNOW

Crowds over anything

Bottom is all sand, so the real concern is people. Summer packs the lineup with surf schools, rental foamies, and swimmers sharing the same water, and lifeguards mark separate swim and surf zones for good reason. Rip currents can pull along the boat launch on bigger swells, so read the channels before paddling out. Harmless leopard sharks gather offshore from June into October, a curiosity rather than a threat.

GETTING THERE

Less than 5 min walk on average

Kellogg Park drops right onto the sand at the foot of Avenida de la Playa, with a free lot open from 4am to 10pm. Street parking lines Camino del Oro and La Jolla Shores Drive when the lot fills, usually early on summer weekends. Walk from car to water runs under a minute across flat sand. Permanent lifeguard tower, restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic tables, and a boat launch sit onsite.
