North Scripps Surf Forecast

La Jolla, San Diego County
North Scripps surf break in La Jolla, San Diego — Scripps Pier from the sand, pilings running to the instrument head.

BREAK TYPE

Beach

Beach break north of Scripps Pier with shifting sandbars.

GOOD FOR

Sand-bottom peaks reshape after every swell, offering short lefts and rights that break with more snap than the mellow Shores section to the south. Chest high through a few feet overhead is the sweet spot, faster and hollower than beginner terrain but still forgiving on the takeoff. Suits solid intermediates hunting a quick session and shortboarders happy to chase whichever bank is firing.

WHEN IT WORKS

Winter Combo Windows

Open to west and northwest energy, so winter is prime, November through March, when combo swells stack the sandbars and Santa Ana offshores groom the faces clean. Summer south pulses sneak in but the pier and La Jolla headland shadow much of the swell window. Morning glass before the afternoon onshore is the play, and a pushing tide toward high usually shapes the peaks best.

WHAT TO KNOW

Crowds And Critters

Sand bottom keeps things mostly benign, so the real issues are crowds and shared water. Kayak and snorkel traffic drifts up from the Shores launch to the south, and the swim boundary north of the pier is enforced by lifeguards. Rip currents form along the pier pilings on bigger days. Leopard sharks and stingrays show up in warm months, harmless if a shuffle step is used walking out.

GETTING THERE

5-15 min walk on average

Free lot at Kellogg Park on Camino del Oro is the main move, though it fills by mid-morning on weekends. From the sand, walk north five to ten minutes toward the pier to reach the designated surf zone. Overflow street parking runs along Avenida de la Playa, and a second entry drops down La Jolla Shores Drive at the Scripps Institution beach path. Restrooms, rinse showers, and lifeguards year-round.
