Sandbar peaks between El Carmel Place and Manhattan Court move with the season, but on a clean west or northwest pulse a workable right off the point can string a shoulder for a few sections. Waist to head high is the sweet spot, with soft, punchy faces over a pure sand bottom. Suits intermediates hunting a mellow session away from the jetty crowd, and beginners on the smaller days.

WHEN IT WORKS

Exposure runs wide open to west and northwest groundswell, with Point Loma trimming most due south energy from the window. Winter delivers the most reliable size from November through March, and spring or fall combo pulses often stack up cleanly when the sandbar cooperates. Mornings before the afternoon onshore stay glassy, and a medium to high tide usually shapes the bank best.

WHAT TO KNOW

Rips can pulse hard alongshore when swell stacks up, especially through the shifting sandbar troughs, so paddle back out through the channel rather than punching the peak. Summer brings dense boardwalk crowds and swimmers inside the flagged zones, and drifting boards become a real concern. Localism stays low, but standard peak etiquette matters when the short window turns on.

Less than 5 min walk on average

Reach it off Mission Boulevard by parking on the street or grabbing a free spot in the Belmont Park lot roughly ten minutes north on foot. The Bonita Cove and Mariners Point lots on the bay side sit two short blocks away across the peninsula. Boardwalk drops in at El Carmel Place and Manhattan Court, both with sand ramps down. Restrooms, showers and a lifeguard tower sit close by.
