Beach break near the Belmont Park amusement area.

GOOD FOR

Sandbar peaks reform along the stretch fronting the amusement park, usually softer than the punchier banks up toward the Pacific Beach line. Waist to head high on a decent WNW or SSW, the shoulders roll gently and reward a clean bottom turn. Suits beginners finding their feet and intermediates cruising longer boards through forgiving, playful walls.

WHEN IT WORKS

Year Round Window

Works year round on almost any swell, with an open window from NW through SSW. Summer south pulses bring the cleanest lines and warmest water, while winter WNW deliveries add size and punch. Mornings usually stand up before the afternoon onshore fills in from the west, and a medium to high tide tends to groom the shifting sandbars best.

WHAT TO KNOW

Crowds Over Cliffs

Rocks are not really the story here, crowds are. Summer weekends pack swimmers, bodyboarders, and learners onto the same peaks, so keep the head up on every paddle out. Rip currents can pull hard on bigger days, especially near the jetty a short walk south. Stay clear of the flagged swim zones and give the lifeguard channels a wide berth.

GETTING THERE

Less than 5 min walk on average

Free public lots flank Belmont Park on Ventura Place and along West Mission Bay Drive, with overflow across Mission Boulevard. Sand sits a 30 second stroll from any of them. Ocean Front Walk, the paved boardwalk, runs the full frontage for barefoot strolls north or south. Restrooms, outdoor showers, and a staffed lifeguard tower sit right behind the main peak.
