Tijuana River Mouth Surf Forecast

Coronado & Imperial Beach, San Diego County

BREAK TYPE

Beach

Remote beach break near the Tijuana River estuary.

GOOD FOR

Sand-bottom peaks break off the river delta, with lefts and rights that shift as storms rearrange the bars. On a clean west or southwest swell the outer sandbars can hold overhead-plus faces with real push, while inside reforms give shorter walls. The wave has a heavy, open-ocean feel thanks to deep water offshore, and it rewards confident paddlers who read shifting takeoff zones.

WHEN IT WORKS

Winter Standout

The spot faces open ocean and grabs west and northwest groundswells best, making winter the prime window from roughly November through March. Southern hemi pulses in summer show up smaller but rideable. Mornings usually offer glass or light east flow before the afternoon onshore builds. A lower incoming tide tends to shape the outer bars, while dead high tends to go soft and mushy.

WHAT TO KNOW

Water Quality First

Runoff from the Tijuana River carries sewage and industrial waste, and county beach closures south of Imperial Beach are near constant, especially after rain. Rip currents pull hard along the river channel, the beach is remote with no lifeguard tower staffed at the mouth, and Border Patrol activity is routine. Historic white shark sightings add to the empty-lineup feel, so most sessions are lightly attended rather than crowded.

GETTING THERE

5-15 min walk on average

Border Field State Park off Monument Road is the closest drive-in, though the gate closes often for contamination and flooding. Most surfers park at the south end of Seacoast Drive in Imperial Beach and walk roughly a mile and a half down the sand past the estuary mouth. A signed horse and hiking trail through the Tijuana Slough refuge is a drier alternative. No restrooms or showers at the break.
