Osprey Surf Forecast

Sunset Cliffs, San Diego County
Osprey surf break in Sunset Cliffs, San Diego — the sandstone point and its sea cave above an iceplant slope.

BREAK TYPE

Reef

A reef-break peak over smooth rock that breaks both left and right.

GOOD FOR

A defined peak breaks over smooth sandstone reef, throwing a punchy left and a slightly longer right off the same takeoff. Best on a chest to overhead W or NW swell, when the wall stands up cleanly before tapering into the channel. Suits confident intermediates with reef reading skills and above, and rewards surfers who can pick lines and burn quickly off the top.

WHEN IT WORKS

Winter NW Window

Exposure favors W and NW swells, which makes the November through March window the most consistent stretch, with clean groundswell lighting up the reef. Mornings usually offer glassy conditions before the afternoon onshore westerly builds and textures the surface. Lower tides expose the shelf and steepen the takeoff, while a pushing mid tide often gives the safest paddle.

WHAT TO KNOW

Rocks And Cliffs

The reef sits shallow at low tide, so dry rock strikes and urchin encounters are the main injury risks, and a mistimed set can sweep a surfer toward the base of the bluff. Currents run north along the cliff on bigger days. The cliff edge itself is crumbly, and rescue access is slow, so surfing with a partner is the standard call. Crowds stay moderate but the regulars know the peak.

GETTING THERE

Less than 5 min walk on average

Park free along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, then pick a use trail down the bluff, roughly a two to five minute walk depending on which notch is chosen. Descents are steep sandstone with loose edges, so entries usually favor low tide when a rock shelf is exposed. No restrooms, showers, or lifeguards at the cliffs, so the closer facilities sit north near the Ocean Beach pier.
