Shifting sandbars on either side of the pilings serve up punchy, often hollow peaks over a sandy bottom, with occasional cobble mixed in. Rights tend to line up on the north side and lefts pitch cleaner to the south, though banks reshuffle after every big swell. Waves run head high on a solid winter pulse and reward quick, committed takeoffs. Suits confident intermediates and up on shortboards or fishes.

WHEN IT WORKS

Exposure runs wide open to west and northwest swell, making late fall through early spring the marquee window when solid WNW pulses light up the sandbars. Summer south swells wrap in smaller and softer. Dawn usually offers the cleanest canvas before the afternoon onshore westerly rakes it, and a pushing tide from low to mid tends to hold shape best.

WHAT TO KNOW

Strong rip currents set up alongside the pilings and can drag surfers into the structure fast, so lineup discipline matters. Powerful closeouts on bigger days create heavy shorebreak, and the San Diego River mouth just north flushes murky runoff after rain that raises bacteria levels. Locals are generally mellow but the peaks get crowded on weekends and holidays. Sharks are talked about more than sighted.

GETTING THERE

Less than 5 min walk on average

The main lot sits at the foot of Niagara Avenue beside the pier, with metered street parking along Abbott and Newport when it fills. Stairs and beach ramps drop right onto the sand, so paddle out is a two minute walk. Restrooms, outdoor showers, and a lifeguard tower cluster near the pier base. Overflow parking works from Saratoga to the north or the Dog Beach lot by the river mouth.
