One of the area's premier big-wave reef breaks, capable of holding massive swells up to 10-15 feet overhead with clean, powerful rights that outshine the lefts.
GOOD FOR
When a solid west or northwest swell wraps in, Little Waimea stands up over a deep reef shelf and throws long, powerful right walls with real shoulder and drop. Faces run head-high on average days and jump well overhead in bigger pulses. The lefts are shorter and closeout-prone, so most sessions favor going right. Best suited to confident chargers on step-ups or a proper gun.

WHEN IT WORKS
The reef needs size to break properly, so peak season runs roughly November through March when North Pacific storms send in west and northwest groundswell. Mornings offer the cleanest window before the daily onshore westerly builds, so dawn patrol is standard. A medium tide holds the shape best; very low tide exposes too much reef, and a pushing high can soften the take-off and drown the shoulder.

WHAT TO KNOW
This is not a forgiving spot. The cliff descent is loose and slick when wet, and the paddle-out threads between exposed reef where a bad set will scrape a surfer across rock. Rip currents run strong on bigger days, hold-downs are real, and the lineup sits well outside with a long swim back. Regulars know each other, so quiet respect in the pecking order goes a long way, and beginners should sit this one out entirely.
GETTING THERE
Park along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard in the pullouts near the break, which fill quickly on swell mornings. From the sidewalk it is a short walk to the cliff edge, then a careful scramble down an informal dirt-and-rock trail roughly five to ten minutes to the water. There are no stairs, showers, or restrooms at the spot; the nearest facilities sit further north at the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park pullouts.
