The reef ledge sits against sand and fires a punchy left that lines along the rock, holding shape for three or four turns on a chest to head high day. Rights peel off the same peak but stay shorter and steeper. It works on most tides and gets hollower as the water drops. Best on a clean southwest with light offshore, and manageable for solid intermediates riding a shortboard or fish.

WHEN IT WORKS

The reef pokes out just enough to grab south and southwest swells that slip past most of the county, so it fires through summer when nearby sand goes flat. Winter brings the more consistent surf on west and northwest angles. Mornings favor light east offshores before the afternoon westerly fills in, and any tide works, though a dropping mid to low sharpens the shape.

WHAT TO KNOW

The reef is real rock and cobble under a thin sand cover, so a low tide wipeout can scrape. Localism stays mild, but the peak is small and gets busy when it turns on, with the Powerhouse crowd watching from the grass. Rip channels form along the reef edge on bigger days. Shark presence is standard San Diego, nothing notable, so most caution goes toward rocks and etiquette.

GETTING THERE

Less than 5 min walk on average

Park at Powerhouse Park off Coast Boulevard and 15th, then drop the stairs west of the grass, under two minutes to sand. The pay lot sits directly across the street, free two hour parking lines Camino Del Mar, and untimed spots wait a block east on Luneta or west on Stratford Court and Ocean Avenue. Grass, restrooms, and outdoor showers all sit at the top.
